On day 3 of our North Coast 500 road-trip, we travelled from Thurdistoft to Durness, via Bettyhill and Tongue. We had a picnic lunch on the shores of Loch Eriboll - the UK’s deepest sea loch. We also ventured into Smoo Cave - the UK’s largest sea cave entrance. We finished the day enjoying the sunset over Sango Bay where we camped the night.
Keep reading about Day 2 of our North Coast 500 road-trip. After we left Hill O’Many Stanes, and missed the 300 Whaligoe Steps turn-off, we continued on to John O’Groats. We spent an hour walking around the sheep-covered hills of Duncansby Head near the Lighthouse and Stacks. We stayed overnight at an amazing Airbnb property, Thurdistoft Farmhouse.
On day 1 of our North Coast 500 road-trip, we travelled from Glasgow, Scotland's largest city, to Inverness. We went via Stirling, Perth, Pitlochry, Dalwhinnie, Kingussie and Aviemore. Highlights included a visit to Dalwhinnie Distillery, a dram of Speyside whisky and the views from Inverness Castle.
So you want to drive the North Coast 500 (NC500)? We completed Scotland’s version of Route 66 over 7 days in September 2018. We’d like to share our experience and insights to help you plan a Scotland road-trip of your dreams. We cover days needed, distances, driving time, costs and provide links to additional resources. We’ve also created an article series that covers each of our days with many of our favourite photos.

All good questions. So we went online and started looking at guided tours, bus tours, day tours and overnight tours. We finally settled on a two-day tour of the Highlands departing from Glasgow with Timberbush Tours.
